COMMITTEE MEMBERS

CHAIRPERSON

I completed my first duathlon when I was 50 years old.
I completed my first triathlon a year later.
Over the last few years I progressed to an Ironman distance in 2011, Forestman, which was a fantastic experience.
My favourite race to date was Helvellyn, Cumbria.

I've made dozens of new friends in Ashford Tri Club, it's great when we have a good turn-out at a race. We all support each other, no matter what standard we are.
The journey is always more important than the destination.

SECRETARY
Jim Hawkins

Renound for competing in the "toughies" of the multi-sport world - Jim is the only ATC club member to have completed the infamous "Helvellyn Tri" twice - how mad is that!!!
Looking very pensive (above), Jim will be taking on the more sedate role of Secretary.

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY
Simon Fox

Simon

Having been 'saved by sport' at school, Simon participated in every sport going before settling on running while studying in New York in the late 1970's. He has competed in marathons, half marathons and 10k races. Last year was his first season in triathlon and he competed in five tris. Describing himself as a 'serious slow' athlete, Simon is interested in athletic performance in older athletes and those new to sport. Please feel free to email him on these matters as well as about anything to do with club kit and resources.

TREASURER
Terry Foreman

Terry Foreman

Better known for his appearances for the GB synchronised skipping team, a 20 year career  as a desk jockey was a good grounding for triathlon. First event was a very cold and wet duathlon at Fowlmead in Feb 2006 where he came dead last by a country mile – progress since then can best be described as slow!

MEN'S CAPTAIN
Lee Gladwell

After 14 years of laziness, I rediscovered exercise in 2010 and am now well and truly addicted to triathlons.
I love the buzz that racing gives you, so tend to race a lot rather than training. Despite coming competely last in my first event I'm now progressing nicely and am looking forward to going further and faster in the future.
The beauty of the sport and the club is the inclusive nature of it. There are always people to support and train with you, no matter what level you are at. Since taking up the sport and joining the club the changes, both physically and mentally have been massive. The positivity you gain through taking part in this brilliant sport transcend through to general life and have certainly made me a much happier and more fulfilled person.
I have entered into an Ironman in 2012, so am going to have to concentrate a bit more training but I'm sure I'll be at lots of the local races this year.

LADIES CAPTAIN
Sally Aspital

Sally Aspital

Described as 'far more competitive than she is competent' Sally has been a triathlete for three years, competing at both sprint and olympic distances. Her 'sporting background' includes sitting on the sofa and eating a lot. Discovering a real liking for entering events her motto this year is 'your limits are often not as low as you think they are'. She aims to do a half ironman triathlon in 2013.

I started triathlon in 2000. I come from a high level of inexperience and incompetence in all three triathlon disciplines which is tempered only by enthusiasm. Up until 2007 this had been a solitary pastime, so I joined the Ashford Tri in 2008. I found the club members to be a friendly and welcoming bunch and I have enjoyed the past year. Of particular benefit has been the support and encouragement during training and competition.

Over the coming year I hope to give something back to the sport through the committee and by taking a coaching qualification. Triathlon is a great sport that can be enjoyed at any level and can provide the opportunity for personal development, both physically and intellectually. Have fun.

SOCIAL SECRETARY

Coming from a cycling background, and a keen interest in sport and outdoors, triathlon caught my interest during winter 2010/11. Two minor problems stood in my way: I couldn't swim and had never ever been into running! I was advised that if I was to get anywhere as a novice triathlete, it was vital that I should join a tri club.
From the very first contact with ATC, I found everyone, without exception, to be extremely friendly, helpful and generous. Athletes of all levels, and especially novices like myself, are welcomed and supported at training, competitions and social events alike.
I am very pleased with my progress in my first year in tri (especially the swim and run!) which I would never have achieved and enjoyed without the help, guidance and encouragement of ATC members. I hope that I can make a contribution by assisting via the committee to reflect my gratitude for what I have learnt, achieved and most importantly enjoyed so far and by perhaps helping other new members to look forward to the same.

I have always been into exercise and fitness for as long as I can remember. I started with MTB Trials riding, then moved to XC Biking, then strength training at the gym followed but running. My recent running adventures have lead me to finish the London Marathon twice and a number of adventure races where i get to play in mud. Last year i decided that running alone was getting a little dull, and the sport of Triathlon has captured my interest. I have my first Triathlon in May, a Sprint distance, with the London Triathlon in September being my primary goal for 2012. My aim for this year to stop aiming to "Complete" races, but start to "Compete" in them.

I have been taking part in triathlon since 2004. I am a reasonable swimmer, average biker and terrible runner but that hasn't stopped me from taking part in sprint, standard, middle and Ironman distance events. I am a qualified British Triathlon race official and a Concept 2 rowing instructor. I am currently building a kayak so I can try out quadrathlon this year too.
